MY REVIEW:
The Silver Cage is one of those books that is life altering. Beautifully written with tons of feeling and passion that leaves you both heartbroken and angry. It’s a book about loss, a book about love but it’s also a book that accentuates biases both from society as well as Evangelical Christians. How living with these judgements can not only be agonizing but tragic.
Caleb Bright, is a young, highly successful author of three books who abruptly just walked away from all his success. Trading the limelight for seclusion, finding refuge in the mountains of Colorado, living a solitary life in a self-imposed Cage. Penance, maybe…. but to me it was both heart wrenching and confining.
That all changes when freelance writer, Michael Beck shows up! Michael couldn’t be more different than Caleb. Michael was carefree with an innocence about him that was both endearing and vulnerable at the same time. Yet, it was just this part of him that would soon consume Caleb.
“I envied him, and his carefree ignorance made me want him more, as if I could somehow draw his happiness into myself.”
While my heart raced as the evolving friendship between these two started to change. What once had begun as a budding kinship among writers began to grow into one of the most beautifully raw, pure and sensual relationships ever.
Even though this book is a work of fiction I cannot relate how real reading The Silver Cage feels. I was often left with goosebumps as well as left in tears. One thing I know is that The Silver Cage is forever embedded in my heart.
My final thought is simple: Love is love! We were all created by a loving God, who am I to judge?
I highly recommend this book to everyone!
