OMG, this book was dark from the get go. I have always love reading books from Stevie but DBD has to be the most twisted and dark I have read by her. From start to finish I could not put this book down in spite of all the messedupitedness. A totally screwed up but at the same time kind of a plausible love story. Loved this book and all of the twisted, gut wrenching, gritty, darkness.
Max’s dad was a bad man, he did bad things and when the mob came calling to settle the score he was drug into it too. What started out as Max trying to find his sister, his only living family, who was kidnapped and sold. He finds himself pulled even deeper into that dark, underground world.
This is where he meets Ava. Ava is the latest victim of the human trafficking cycle he has been pulled into. It’s his job to reprogram the women, most of whom are druggies/prostitutes. He would strip them of what they believed they were and teach them to depend on and love their captor. Once this was done they were sold.
That was until Ava came to him. She was not the typical girl that he got, she was bright, articulate and had a darkness within her that he could identify with. She also has a family, a family with mob connections. Like the others she depended on Max but the darkness from her life gave her and Max a special connection. One that he couldn’t ignore and certainly one he could not deny.
Some may say it’s fate that brought Max and Ava together but was it really?
Circumstances of their lives may have been destined to make them meet.
Maybe the moon and the stars just aligned right but no matter what it was Max and Ava were meant to love each other.
