“This Chad guy sounds like a real champ,” he says.
“I’m the moron that married him.”
I pick at the edge of the table to keep from meeting his eyes.
Chad was not my best work. Not my best choice, or the greatest guy I’ve ever dated, nor am I proud that I went through with the whole thing. But I did it and I can’t change it. I need to figure out how to accept all that.
“I’m sure you had great intentions,” Holden says.
“I did. Want to know how deep his intentions ran?” I strum my fingers against the tabletop as I look up at him. “He left me by sticking a note to the kitchen table with a dollop of strawberry jelly.”
I blow out a breath and regret word-vomiting all that. It was too deep. Too raw and real. Opening up to Holden is too easy, and I probably just ruined the mood.
He watches me for a few seconds before grinning. “He didn’t even use grape? Rude.”
I smile, relieved that he didn’t dig deeper. “Right? He didn’t even use grape on his sandwiches.”
“Big red flag right there,” he says, pointing a finger my way.
“You know, Gramma always said not to marry a man that cuts the crusts off his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.”
“And why is that?”
“Because that’s an indication that someone doesn’t like boundaries. Guess I should’ve listened to her. He even cut the crusts off his grilled cheese.”
He gasps, his jaw falling to the table in mock horror. “That’s serial-killer shit right there.”
“Hey, I don’t know what he’s been doing the last couple of years of his life.” I take a napkin from the dispenser. “You might be right.”
“So why did you marry him? You didn’t get serial-killer vibes from the start?”
It’s a question I’ve asked myself a million times, because down deep, I knew it wasn’t right for me. I just ignored my gut and did it anyway.

One resides in Honey Creek her whole like and the other just lived there during the summertime while visiting the grandparents. Being nearly inseparable during the summers their friendship had gone on hiatus through the years. But that was about to change. So, hang on and get ready for own heck of a swoon fest!! Sophie Banks had grown up living only in Honey Creek. After a short stint away in Florida for college she came back missing all the things that had rooted her there. During the time she was at college her grandmother had passed away, leaving her the Honey House, the Bed & Breakfast she had owned. The one thing she wanted to do with was to make her grandma proud. Now as proprietor of the Bed & Breakfast she had an outstanding tax bill. One that she needed funds to pay since her ex-husband had pretty much emptied out her bank account. Holden McKenzie had returned to Honey Creek to help his Paps out at his veterinary clinic while he is on vacation. The timing worked out perfect having just lost his job with the clinic he worked for in Phoenix. Besides, it gave him something to do while he waits to hear back from his dream job with Montgomery Farms. It’s been a long-time dream to work with Montgomery Farms a world-renowned facility. Holden’s first day on the job was pretty hilarious with Dottie, the receptionist, giving him the low down on small-town vet life too!! It’s inevitable that these two would run into each other sooner or later! It’s when Sophie goes into her Pap’s clinic when they see each other it was as though no time had passed. The conversation was easy, banter fun and in the end, they would meet later at the town bar with friends. The more time spent together the more that was learned about each other. But when Holden’s chance of getting the job at Montgomery Farm hinged on him being a settled, committed, married man that he found himself in a bind. That is until he cooked up a proposition for Sophie. He needed a wife and she needed 5-grand for back taxes, together they could solve each other problem. Holden would pay the back taxes for Sophie; she would marry him to impress the owner of Montgomery Farms. With everything accomplished they were free go their separate ways. But what happens when feelings begin to make things get blurry and knowing that an end date for this arrangement will be coming?
