I love Melanie’s Men of Hidden Justice books. Second in Command is gritty, action packed, suspenseful and for the life of me I couldn’t put it down! After Matteo left as the boss of the unit his second in command Marcus became the new boss. And let me tell you Marcus is every bit the vigilante as Matteo and just as eager to work for justice.

The book jumps right into action with Marcus and his men on a mission to rescue a group of women from the confines of where human traffickers have them holed up. As the mission is about to wrap up, Marcus and his six sense of danger and lead his men on another sweep of the premises they have just cleared. Even though they knew it been thoroughly checked. It then that they discover a faint tapping noise. Upon further checking they find a woman who was kept in a cage between the walls. Marcus takes it upon himself to rescue this woman and for some reason takes her into his own care. It was very lucky for Missy too as the building was to be destroyed after the mission was complete.

Covered in bruises, dehydrated and thin from lack of eating it’s almost more than Marcus can bear. But as fate would have it, the woman, Missy quickly finds that Marcus is there to protect her and places her trust in him. At first Missy is very timid and reliant upon Marcus for safe keeping. But as she becomes stronger and more defiant, she challenges him. Eventually getting to the point that the sexual tension between them is simmering. You have to give credit where credit is deserved, Marcus really tries to put the ice on it all due to their age difference as well as his experience. Yet, the more they are together the greater the feels and passion increases. That is until Missy persuades him otherwise, after that it steamy as hell between them.

Once she starts opening up to Marcus, he finds out that she was part of sting gone wrong and captured by the trafficker. Finding out she was a cop kind of made sense as to how tough she was. Needless to say, Missy because of her background in law enforcement was eager to help with the mission the guys were working on. And why not she questioned? Especially since she herself had been a victim of the man they were after. But was there ever a chance she that Marcus would even let her? I loved how Marcus, this big brute of a guy was so sweet and tender with Missy and was this big protective guy at the same time… who would have even thought?
