Reading the Fourth Time Charm was absolutely delightful, it fully embraced the friends to lovers genre. Packed with all kinds of feels… at times emotional and other times downright heartbreaking! L J and Marissa had grown up as childhood friends, so was natural that they became best friends as much as they spent time together. But both L J and Marissa had their own hurdles to overcome … especially Marissa! Their journey that will always be one of my favorites!!
Marissa dad pretty much just abandoned her when she was young. Leaving her to grow up with a mom who was self-absorbed. So frequently Marissa was left alone, often for days, and left to fend for herself. This is where L J and his family were often a lifesaver which only left her wishing even more for a family like his. It was hard not to love L J. He was a great guy and had a heart of gold plus he was always there for Marissa. Even growing up he always took care of Marissa, even when he had no idea of how he came to her rescue. In fact, his family was so use to her being around it was like she was already part of family. The one thing that she didn’t have, but there was also another connection to his family that would always keep them close.
Upon graduating from high school, they both went their separate ways to different colleges. L J to play football FU and hopefully make it into the pros. Marissa to NY where she was pursuing a degree in art. Yet when Marissa’s estranged dad ended up with a job coaching at FU, she was able to transfer there too. Now these best friends would be able to see each other again.
It wasn’t until Marissa had an apartment fire that she and L J really spent any time together. He moved her into the house that he, some of his team and friends lived in. So now he and Marissa would really be inseparable. Nonetheless this made it even harder for these friends as they fought feelings, the real, hidden ones they really had for each other. Until they didn’t. Now that everything was out in the open it opened the door to all kinds of unrequited passion. But this created another problem for them… Marissa’s dad.
Being the schmuck that he was, Marissa’s dad didn’t like L J being around his daughter. So, to discourage him from dating Marissa he cut his playing time. Since L J had a lot riding on him making it to the pros it was important for him and his plans to help out his family. Less playing time, less chances of being seen by his agent, the less chances of making it to the combine to be drafted by the pros! But it also worked against Marissa too. As long as she and L J dated, her dad wouldn’t help her with the tuition allowing her to accept the internship in Italy that she wanted.
Not knowing what the future held for them, especially when it looked like Marissa wasn’t getting her internship, she made her decision. After much thought she realized what she wanted most in life was being with L J. She chose to sacrifice her scholarship to be with him.
The Fourth Time Chance is one of those books that will wrap it’s self around your heart. Plus, there is a plethora of layers to this story. Peeling them away only makes you love L J so much!! He was so sweet and loved with his whole heart. Oh, how my heart ached so badly for Marissa and the broken family she grew up with. A mother that was more interested in herself than taking care of her daughter. A dad who was never present at the times when she needed him.
