“Come here.” The black fringe on her bell-shade skirt swings in the breeze as she sashays across the porch where I stand huddled in the corner. “I can’t even tell you have breasts. Let me undo a few buttons. And stop pretending to smoke, it’s giving me second-hand embarrassment.” She snatches the cigarette from my fingers and reaches in, but I dodge the wily hands attempting to undress me.

“It’s winter, if you haven’t noticed,” I whine and slump my butt against the porch rail. “Why couldn’t we just wear ugly sweaters like everyone else for the holidays?”

“Because there’s enough Christmas in the world already. I’m not making latkes and singing Hebrew for my half of the holiday party, but I’m real into having a do-over of Halloween. So screw your sweaters and get your tits out.”

Dear Diary,

I’d like a do-over of agreeing to this plan.

Why can’t we just be paired up with people at birth? That sounds like a brilliant idea to me. We’d all know what to expect and it would be settled without having to risk your heart. Most importantly, we wouldn’t have to do things like slip away behind the house in the dark of night to switch bras with your best friend because, as Charlotte said, her bra has better underwire to accentuate the ladies. It does, and my breasts look phenomenal, but still.

Life would be easier if the powers-that-be assigned our life mate without giving us a say. Kind of like imprinting. It worked for the wolves in Twilight, so I’m sure it’s doable.
